Contignano

The center of Contignano is of Roman origin, it rises along the scenic road that connects Chianciano Terme with the Amiata. The country is constituted by its ancient strongholds along with his type of medieval village still well preserved. It seems that his name might derive from a man, this Acontinius or Acontius, one of the veterans to which the consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla distributed land in Tuscany after a successful career in the ranks of the Roman Empire. The presence of Contignano was given towards the year 1028 through a parchment which speaks of a donation. The country is composed of five hundred inhabitants, famous for his excellent pecorino cheese that it produces and for the Festival of ravioli that aims annually. Among the events are in the month of April "Exhibition of Geranio" and musical concerts outdoors. A visit to the historic centre of Contignano starts from the port of Castle from which you access Piazza della Torre, an elegant living room outdoors, with its well. Outside the walls of country we are immersed among the clays, gullies and fragrant meadows, reaching the bottom of the valley where the river flows Orcia.
