Castiglione D'orcia

The town of Castiglione d'Orcia is part of the province of Siena at the centre of Val d'Orcia, a short distance from the highway Cassia, located on top of a hill, part of Appendix northern dell'Amiata, while the other side of the valley the country is composed also of the hamlet of Rocca d'Orcia, also of medieval origins built above a rocky hill on top of what we look at the famous Rock of Tentennano. Since 1252 the country was transformed into Free Town, even if already in 1274 was included in Santa Fiora, dividing the territories between the members of the family Aldobrandeschi. In the fourteenth century had already possession of Siena, which subsequently granted to powerful families in exchange for favors in economic, as the first and Piccolomini Salimbeni after using later Castiglione as a basis for their revolt against Siena. Subsequently Castiglione passed into the hands of the Florentines, who in 1605 entrusted to the noble Bolognese family Riario.
